Devora Klionsky, the youngest daughter of Matt Klionsky, became bat mitzvah on Aug 21 at Congregation Rodfei Zedek our Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.

She chanted half of the Torah portion and the haftorah, and also led the Musaf service and delivered a dvar Torah.  Her grandfather, father, and sisters chanted the other Torah aliyot.

Her preparation for this milestone event was supported by her education at Akiba Schechter Jewish Day School, where Torah chanting and service-leading skills are learned several years before children reach the age of bnei mitavah.

Like her siblings, Devora is an excellent student, partly manifested in the past year by her participation at the national level in two academic competitions - the National Hebrew Bible Contest (Chidon haTanach) in NYC, and the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.

Her spelling skills are mostly based on her voracious appetite for reading, amounting to well over 1000 novels since she began with 'chapter books'.

In 6th grade, she registered the highest page total ever recorded in her school's annual reading contest.  She's also read several of the Harry Potter books - in Hebrew!

In the non-academic realm, she loves to bake, frequently making cookies and brownies (and an occasional pie) from scratch.  Also, she likes to swim.  And, she delights in wearing non-matching socks and earrings.

While visiting his younger brother's family in Chicago Daniel Klionsky, the webmaster of this site attended the after bat mizvah party for Devora Klionsky. At the party, Daniel met first time with Matt's siblings and his parents.
