During the April 2005 Chicago Public Schools' Illinois Junior Academy of Sciences (IJAS) Science Fair held at Hyde Park's Museum of Science and Industry, judges from the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) selected for advancement to this year's International finals four of the 35 projects already selected as the best entries in the IJAS competition.

Each of these four young scientists earned an all-expenses paid, week-long trip to the ISEF, to be held in Phoenix in May.

One of those four finalists was Gideon Klionsky! Gideon, 16, currently attends Grade 11 at the Lincoln Park High School IB program in Chicago.

His 8th and 9th grade Science Fair projects also garnered invitations to the Illinois finals.

Also, other academic contest entries have earned him invitations to the National Hebrew Bible Contest finals in NYC (7th grade), Illinois State Geography Bee Finals (8th grade), Illinois State Math Team finals competition (9th and 10th grades) and Chicago Metro History Fair (10th grade).

This year, he was also among the 35 top Chicago Public High School Science Fair competitors, and was selected to attend the Illinois Jr. Academy of Science State Science Fair finals to be held next month.

In addition, he submitted a paper related to this science fair project to the Chicago regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, and became one of the 21 finalists selected to present their papers at Loyola University a few weeks ago.

All three of Gideon's winning Science Fair entries have involved baseball-related projects (two with baseball physics, this year with baseball statistics).
