San Francisco, May 10, 2008: Dick Plotz of Providence, Rhode Island was in town and met with Daniel Klionsky at Daniel's house for a cup of tea, a cake ( from the nearby French bakery) and a lovely discussion.

Although Dick is not a Klionsky descendant ( too bad!) , Dick's brother Tom Plotz is married to Cathy Klion of Washington DC area, great granddaughter of Berl/Barnet Klionsky.

With the MacDraw software package working for him, Dick is behind the creation of all the Klionsky family tree charts in PDF format.

The uniform style of these charts is distinctive, clear and elegant.

Dick's interest in genealogy started when he was a kid when he saw a nice family tree of his own family. That chart was done by hand, a single copy. This elaborate chart, produced by his grandmother's cousin, was nowhere to be found after his death. The same destiny awaited another chart by another relative, but this time Dick had a chance to make a handwritten copy before the chart's disappearance.

By the 1970s, with the advent of the Xerox copy machine, Dick was ready to create his own extended family charts. His dad, a physician, installed a copy machine in his office and Dick used it to make a copies of his still handwritten charts to distribute among his family members.

The break-through came in 1980s with the rise of the Apple Macintosh. On of the first Macintosh models included the simple drawing program called "MacDraw", which was perfectly suited for creating family charts. Since then, Dick has produced a great number of family trees for his own family as well as for families of friends.

Daniel and Dick also discussed ways to modify his family trees with their unique style by using other software packages. The solution remains to be found.

The time flew by very fast. The cake was delicious. Everybody had a good time.
